Maddie's® Pet Rescue Project in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Maddie’s® Pet Rescue Project in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is working with Maddie’s® Spay/Neuter Project in Tuscaloosa Alabama to save all of the community’s healthy and treatable shelter dogs and cats within ten years.

Maddie’s® Pet Rescue Project is a coalition of animal control agencies and rescue groups focused solely on increasing adoptions.

The coalition’s lead agency is T-Town Paws. Other partners include The Humane Society of West Alabama, A.D.A.R. and Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter. The Project includes all of Tuscaloosa County, population 186,500.

Tuscaloosa is located in west central Alabama. The county is named after a Choctaw Creek Indian Chief whose name, Tuskaloosa, means Black Warrior. In the 1500’s, Tuskaloosa was defeated in battle by the army of Hernando de Soto. Today, Tuscaloosa is home to the University of Alabama and Stillman College.

In 2004, rescue and sheltering organizations in Tuscaloosa County sheltered 7,923 dogs and cats, euthanizing 5,835. Out of the total deaths, approximately 1,952 were healthy.

The second year goal of Maddie’s® Pet Rescue Project is to increase the number of adoptions by 782 over the 2004 baseline and decrease the number of dogs and cats euthanized in Tuscaloosa shelters by at least 782 below the baseline. Adoption goals will be met by expanding hours in Maddie’s Adoption Room, an offsite location in a high-profile shopping center; a weekly Maddie’s Pet Page in The Tuscaloosa News; adoptions at veterinary clinics through Maddie’s Vet Pets; a series of Maddie Adopt-a-thons; and adoptions at senior citizen sites.

Maddie’s Fund has awarded $200,919 to support the Project’s second year, which began in April 2006. As goals are achieved, the Foundation will make up to $2 million available to Maddie Projects in Tuscaloosa over seven years.
